Abby is a graduate of UBC's Midwifery program, and has attended over 300 births in the past decade during her career as a birth doula and midwife.
A mother of three, she's felt the pull to work with birthing families ever since watching her first birth video at age ten. When her first child was born, she realized firsthand how empowering a well-supported labour and birth can be, and by her second pregnancy, she knew she wanted to provide that same support to birthing families — of all flavours, shapes and sizes.
She's spent her career doing just that. After getting a degree in Psychology and Women's Studies, she worked as a La Leche League Leader, childbirth education teacher, crisis line counsellor, and birth doula, before returning to school for her Bachelor of Midwifery. Winner of the UBC Midwifery Award for Citizenship and Fellowship, she's studied childbirth in placements across western Canada, from Regina to Yellowknife to New Westminster.
She's thrilled to be part of the team at New West Community Midwives to provide care to your growing family!
When Abby's not in clinic or at a birth, you'll find her at home in New Westminster, surrounded by her own family — likely cooking a meal, enjoying her flower garden, or playing at the nearest lake.
Hello! My name is Brittany and I am absolutely thrilled to be joining Abby and getting to know the families in New West!
As soon as I heard about midwives and the work that they do, I knew I had found my dream job. The central tenets of midwifery, focusing on informed choice and autonomy in one’s own life and health care, have long been important foundations to the work I have done, and I have often sought out work in kind and supportive roles to empower those going through transitional periods in their lives. I am delighted to be able to bring my interests together in one very exciting career!
Prior to entering midwifery, I completed a Bachelor of Arts with honours in Psychology, worked at a sexual assault crisis centre and an autism resource centre, and also volunteered at a sexuality clinic and in second stage housing for women. Through these previous experiences, I have learned the value of collaborating on inter-professional teams to create programs and services that are client-centred. The research I completed during my undergrad fueled my desire to practice evidence-based care, and today I continue to engage in and publish research.
When not practicing midwifery and snuggling with babies, you’ll likely find me spending time with my partner and our fur-babies, finding a new creative project to dive into, or out exploring new places.
