Abby is a graduate of UBC's Midwifery program, and has attended over 300 births in the past decade during her career as a birth doula and midwife.
A mother of three, she's felt the pull to work with birthing families ever since watching her first birth video at age ten. When her first child was born, she realized firsthand how empowering a well-supported labour and birth can be, and by her second pregnancy, she knew she wanted to provide that same support to birthing families — of all flavours, shapes and sizes.
She's spent her career doing just that. After getting a degree in Psychology and Women's Studies, she worked as a La Leche League Leader, childbirth education teacher, crisis line counsellor, and birth doula, before returning to school for her Bachelor of Midwifery. Winner of the UBC Midwifery Award for Citizenship and Fellowship, she's studied childbirth in placements across western Canada, from Regina to Yellowknife to New Westminster.
She's thrilled to be part of the team at New West Community Midwives to provide care to your growing family!
When Abby's not in clinic or at a birth, you'll find her at home in New Westminster, surrounded by her own family — likely cooking a meal, enjoying her flower garden, or playing at the nearest lake.
Hello New West families! My name is Sommer and I am thrilled to join the team at New West Community Midwives.
I am a settler on the beautiful and bountiful unceded Coast Salish territories and live in East van with my two kids and a variety of pets.
I spend my free time playing sports, being in nature or getting crafty. In my previous life I acquired a B.Sc in Chemistry and Life Sciences and worked many different jobs in the service industry, childcare, healthcare and finance before I listened to the call of Midwifery.
I came to birth work first as a Doula and now as a Registered Midwife. From the experience of birthing my own two children, I believe that pregnancy and birth is an empowering and positive experience that is served best by inclusive and supportive care that honors the
pregnant person’s individual needs and values.
I am a recent grad from the midwifery program at UBC. During midwifery school, I had clinical placements in various urban and rural communities in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver
Island, including 6 weeks in Uganda, Africa learning from Ugandan Midwives and serving the families receiving maternity care in the villages where I stayed.
I am constantly humbled and inspired by the transformative power of childbearing and feel blessed and grateful for the invitation to walk alongside the folks at New West Community Midwives on their pregnancy journeys.
